Stanley Herring, MD is a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal and sports medicine, with a particular interest in disorders of the spine and sports concussion. Dr. Herring’s practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of neurological and musculoskeletal injuries, particularly focusing on spinal disorders in active people and athletes and sports-related concussions.
Dr. Herring is a clinical professor at the University of Washington (UW), director of the UW Medicine Sports Health & Safety Institute, medical director of Sports, Spine and Orthopedic Health for UW Medicine, and co-medical director of the Sports Concussion Program, a partnership between UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s.
Dr. Herring is transitioning from his long time long-time role as a team physician for the Seattle Seahawks and continues as a team physician for the Seattle Mariners and as a consultant to the UW Sports Medicine Program. He is a member of Pop Warner’s Medical Advisory Committee, the NCAA Concussion Task Force and chairs the Medical Advisory Committee of USA Football.
Dr. Herring has held many national leadership positions including President of the North American Spine Society, member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Sports Medicine and Board Member of the Foundation for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He is also a founding member of the Physiatric Association of Sports, Spine & Occupational Rehabilitation and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Herring was a major contributor to the successful passage of the Zackery Lystedt Law in Washington State, and his continued work helped pass similar legislation in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. . Dr. Herring holds the Zackery Lystedt Sports Concussion Endowed Professorship.
