What is an Athletic Trainer?

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association defines athletic trainers (ATs) as highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals specifically trained in the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical conditions and emergent, acute and chronic injuries. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA)Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.

Contact the California Athletic Trainers' Association

The AATA was founded in 1987 in a small meeting room at what is now the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock Arkansas.  In the 1980s, Athletic Trainer were just becoming prominent and were being hired across the country.  Associations began to form as a collective voice for each state’s certified members.  Now with over 400 members, the AATA works to promote and advance the profession of athletic training through membership engagement.  The AATA works to maintain high professional standards, support member education initiatives, and serve as advocates for the physically active population in Arkansas. 

Apply for the Safe Sports School Award

The Safe Sports School Award recognizes schools around the country that take the crucial steps to keep their athletes free from injuries. Schools must fulfill specific safety criteria to qualify for this elite distinction, including the creation of a comprehensive athletic health care system and the coordination of pre-participation physical examinations.

There is currently no board of regulation in California, since there is no requirement for registration, licensure or certification.
